How to choose Cosmetics for your Skin Tone

If you’re new to using cosmetic products, or perhaps a bit clueless as to what colors work best with your skin tone, this post is for you.

With myriad colors to choose from, it can be difficult to determine which colors work best with your eyes and skin. Some women simply see an eyeshadow hue they adore, and so they buy it, completely unaware that instead of making them look fantastic, they will end up looking…not so great.

Whether you have light skin, medium skin, or dark skin, there are colors that accentuate every aspect of your face and compliment your eyes. Here is a detailed view of what you can wear to compliment yours.

Light/Fair Skin Tone

Those with a lighter skin tone and light eyes such as blue or green can benefit from the use of pastel colors in both lip and eyeshadow productss, such as light blues, peaches, and pinks, and lighter shades of foundation. Using a darker foundation blend to give yourself the appearance of a tan or darker skin is never a good look. Be sure to match the foundation products you buy to the color of the inside of your wrist. This is a great way to be sure you are going to have the most natural look. Dark mascaras look great on light eyes. When using eyebrow powder, you can opt for something similar to your natural color to simply fill in gaps, or go for something more dramatic and darker than your actual hair color.

Medium Skin Tones

Medium skin tones with darker eyes tend to look fantastic with dark green, brown, dark grey, or gold eyeshadow. Pastels do not work well with medium skin tones. Stay away from lighter shades, as this won’t blend well with your skin or eyes and may even make you look washed out. As far as eyeliners are concerned, dark black/charcoal colors work well with hazel and brown eyes. Mascara should be black or charcoal grey. Blush should be mauve, dark mauve, coral, dark pink, or pinkish brown. Lip shades appropriate for this skin tone would be deep, rich reds, browns, nudes, and berry shades with brown tints. Foundation should match your skin, and this can be done by matching the foundation color in the bottle to the inside of your wrist. Eyebrow powder should match the shade of your natural hair color, or you could go darker – never lighter.

Dark Skin Tones

Choosing colors for darker skin tones can be tricky, as there are  variations to the term ‘dark’. For women who have warm tones to their dark skin, colors such as bronze, peach, gold, red, and brown look fantastic. Those who have cooler tones to their skin would look great in blue, silver, purple, and pink. Whichever category your skin tone falls into, the colors stated would look fantastic in terms of eyeshadow, blush, or lip color. Foundation will be based off of the color of your skin; you would do this by matching the bottle of foundation to the inside of  your wrist for a matching tone. Eyebrow powder should be dark.

Education is Half the Battle

Choosing the colors that are right for you just require some knowledge and research. Take some time to do some research on the internet and come up with some pictures you can reference that depict your skin tone and the appropriate colors the women in the photos wear.
